Here’s another sneaky way to see some neat backyard gardens. You can walk, but if you ride a bike, you’ll see more, and get as good a work out as if you stayed home weeding and raking all day long.
No bike? Try Bicycle Heaven in Geneva, IL. It’s right in the middle of designated Fox River bike trails going south or north. Twenty dollars for all day. Quick check-in with wonderfully pleasant clerks. Good deal all round. Need a map? Google Kane County Illinois bike trails.
Last Monday (Oct. 10) we caught the trail at Rt 25 (east side of river at State St-Rt. 38) and rode by backyard gardens--some front, depending how the trail twists and turns—until we reached South Elgin. Actually, the views of the Fox River on a fall day were more tantalizing, but we captured a few surprising gardens not otherwise seen curb-side like this one. You can capture this unique garden also by walking. Park by the Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin. Then walk a few steps south on the walk/bike path.

And check out the river directly across from the railroad display—one of the most scenic places to view the Fox.
