Transplanting in the winter? Yes it can be done. Okay so January/February are coming (are here) and last week it was 15 degrees (or today) and there was snow covering every plant except those you forgot to cut down in the fall. But guess what? The next week it turned 55 degrees and everything started thawing and then the next day 65 degrees, the next 70 degrees.—yes this does happen in the Midwest--and then you start getting real excited.  It was a good thing you were lazy and didn’t cut down those plants last fall because now you can actually see where the hostas and lilies are. You have shed your parka, dug out the spade and started digging away. Wield that knife and saw through that plant with a sharp knife and divide into three or four separate plants and cart them right over to some clear part of your garden and plant--be careful not to dig up plants you already have there. Voila. It works even if all the great garden experts have warned there is “only” one time to transplant plants and it's NOT winter. Sell in the spring for prosperity.
